The urge for me to create usually comes from my feeling of not knowing when I am involving in real-life experiences. I turn inward to comb through and reflect upon my past experiences subjectively as a way of self-care; a process of knowing from the inside.
The majority of my works are repetitions of small gestures or simple actions based on the idea of futile resistance – I have to accept the situation passively, but I still need to do something. Do something to enact double-reflection on topics such as screen-based speedy lifestyle, traditional Eastern family relationships or institutional bureaucracy. Satire and humour are my alternative tactics to critique or express my discontent with certain situations, which in turn also serves as my form of futile resistance. If there seem to be only negative trends and, at the same time, you cannot be too radical, what else can you do then?
With the help of self-archiving (screenshots, sound, emails, everyday objects, etc.), I hope to make visible social-political issues that I have experienced in a performative way which in my case is lens-based performance.
Biography
Xingrong Qiao (b.1997, Guiyang) is a Chinese born subjective thinker living and working in the Netherlands. She is currently doing a part-time job at a Chinese restaurant in Utrecht, while trying to figure out how to support her practice after graduation.
